It has been a whirlwind of 11 days of travel. Following a dream, my husband I took our kids off on a very long, “epic” western road trip. You can see more on my Instagram account. I have so much to share, but for now we are resting, doing laundry, and getting back into the groove. It is hard to come back to routine and demands that exist (outside of gorgeous canyons that demand to be looked at lovingly). But we are getting there.
Until I can sit down properly and write my travel logs and the other posts I have been working on, I thought I would pop in for our coffee talk session, to see how things currently are.
“currently” I am…
reading… Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban with my 8-year-old We have been reading one Potter book per year and he feels the magic. (He will be Harry for Halloween.) If I allow myself to admit it, we love reading it to him more than he loves us reading it out loud.
Anything about Stink Moody with my 5-year-old. He adores Stink in a special way and the books make my heart warm. McDonald created such a wonderful character.
For myself, in addition to all the books I have worked through over the year and the ones I have put down (I just could not make it through Sedaris’ Diary, I love him and I tried hard, but I gave up), I am nearly finished with Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. This is a surprisingly riveting book about a topic I don’t know much about. It turns out reading it while traveling over the U.S. can rekindle a love affair with this vast country inside a person’s heart. Which I needed after the tone of that last book.
eating… healthy and trying to cleanse the body after 11 days of eating while traveling. Even if we did opt for cooking ourselves and taking grocery store salad bars as much as possible during our trip, it just wasn’t the same to my system as our usual homemade eating is. That means today was lots of green tea and cucumber/lemon water. Although not another juice cleanse! I did spend time today making up another batch of ketchup using Against All Grain’s recipe (my go-to and favorite which doesn’t seem to be available online! I have this book, which I love for savories but not so much for sweets) and some gluten-free zucchini muffins.
thinking… of the world and how I can make it a better place for my kids. I am going to a senior home this week to see if we can volunteer there occasionally. My Cinderella’s Closet is still going, but with all the pain and tragedy, I find myself wanting to do more. While struggling with, see below:
wondering… how to read more books and still get done all of the chores and requirements in my life. I want to do it all. I want to read everything, share with you here all the time, write moving essays, edit the magazines I do, practice more yoga, cook and eat healthy, keep my house clean, play tennis, go paddleboarding, and do ALL THE THINGS. I still love my bullet journal system as it keeps me in charge of my time and head space, but any other tips for how to do it all?
enjoying… the fact that my kids are a little older now (at the perfect ages!) and we can experience the family adventures we always dreamed of. While moving about the past week or so, we saw so many parents with little bitties. And while a piece of my heart did melt and my uterus gave a little ping, it also made me appreciate how fantastic this phase of parenting is. Can we just stay here forever, please?
loving… these EarPlanes for kids. These are game changers! As a kid, I had a slew of problems with my ears and I remember how painful plane descents were. It turns out my 8-year-old inherited my bum ear proportions (the 5 -year-old is fine). When I saw these, or a sister product, in the airport, I decided it was worth trying instead of watching my child suffer with ears I couldn’t help. It may have been psychosomatic, but these worked.
As usual, I am not watching a lot of television. Nothing seems to hold my attention and while I used to get so excited for football season, I still have the same issues with the NFL today as I had in 2014.
But if you have something good for me, please leave it in the comments below, I would love to hear!
Any other thoughts you have for me, friends, I am all ears – beautifully unclogged, EarPlane ears!
